President Buhari Opens Up On Arrested Judges

President Muhammadu Buhari has opened up on the reason for the arrest of Supreme Court justices and judges across the nation. The Presidency said the on-going `surgical operation’ against some judicial officers is specifically targeted at corruption and not at the judiciary as an institution. Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, made the clarification in a statement in Abuja on Sunday. According to Shehu, the president reserves his highest respect for the institution of the judiciary as the third arm of government and will not do anything to undermine its independence. Shehu said Buhari remained a committed democrat, “in words and in his actions, and will not take any action in violation of the constitution. “In a robust democracy, such as ours, there is bound to be a plurality of opinions on any given issue but there is a convergence of views that the country has a corruption problem that needs to be corrected. “But reports by a section of the media are giving us cause for concern.’’ The Presidential aide advised that, in undertaking the task of reporting, the media should be careful about the fault lines they opened. “It is wrong to present this incident as a confrontation between the executive and judicial arms of government,’’ he said Shehu said the Presidency had received assurances from the Department of Security Services (DSS) that all due processes of the law, including the possession of search and arrest warrants, were obtained before the searches on some judges. “To suggest that the government is acting outside the law in a dictatorial manner is to breach the interest of the state,’’ he said. The arrest of three judges for alleged corruption has angered some stakeholders in the judiciary, especially Nigeria Bar Association (NBA). The NBA has asked the president to order the release of the judges or face the consequences.

Woman's Hijab Pulled Down In Busy London Street In 'Shocking Racially-Motivated Attack'

A woman had her hijab pulled down by a man in a racially motivated assault on a London street last month. The victim, in her 20s, was not injured but was shocked and distressed by what happened. She was walking on High Road in Seven Sisters, north London, with a female friend at about 7.30pm on Wednesday 28 September. As they crossed the road by the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London, she was approached from behind by two men. One of them pulled down the hijab she was wearing, before both men made off towards Pelham Road, Scotland Yard said. The first suspect is described as white, in his late 20s or early 30s, with blond or ginger shaved hair and stubble. Police said he was about 5ft 6in and wearing a burgundy hooded top and carrying a Tesco bag in his right hand. The second suspect was of Mediterranean appearance, in his late 20s or early 30s and clean-shaven, with spiky hair. He wore a grey hooded top. Det Const Ben Cousin, of Haringey Community Safety Unit, said: “The was a shocking attack in broad daylight in the middle of a busy street. Racially and religiously motivated crimes will not be tolerated. I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this attack to contact police.” The police are yet to find the men.

Former Topless Model Arrested Over Facebook Terrorism Links To Islamic State

A former glamour model who was listed on an Islamic State watchlist has been arrested by anti-terrorism police in the United Kingdom. Kimberley Miners was arrested on suspicion of possessing material likely to be useful for committing or preparing an act of terrorism. The 27-year-old, who posed topless for The Sun newspaper, converted to Islam in 2010 after the death of her father. She used Facebook to communicate with a British fighter in Syria, a man known as Abu Usamah al-Britani, and allegedly shared violent Isis propaganda material on social media. Miners was arrested on Friday and released on Saturday, the report said. She was previously warned about communicating with extremists online. Police also searched her home in Bradford, Yorkshire. The Independent reported Miners denied having any links to terrorism and she has previously said she did not want to be a jihadi bride but she was interested in travelling to Syria. A spokeswoman for the North East Counter Terrorism Unit said a 27-year-old Bradford woman was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation. Social media accounts believed to have been used by Miners have links to suspected extremists, and included videos of Isis training. Miners turned to Islam after her father died in a freak accident in 2010, when he fell head first into a frozen lake. Miners has previously said converted to Islam for peaceful reasons. "I've gone from glamour model to something completely different." Anti-terror police were reportedly concerned she was being groomed and would eventually leave the UK for Syria. She had previously visited camps in Turkey near the border with Syria.

Arrest Of Judges: Dino Melaye Also Speaks

Dino Melaye, a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Sunday condemned the arrest and invasion of the residence of some Judges in the federation by the Department of State Services, saying the agency acted outside its core mandate. Dino who admitted that judges could be tried, however said the DSS went about it the wrong way. His words; “I have studied the Act setting up DSS, Nigerian Intelligence Agency and DIA and can conclude that the DSS operatives went outside their core mandate. There is no doubt that many Judges are corrupt. “It is also important to state the need to sanitise the judiciary of corruption that make Judges not to give commercial rulings which create terrible precedence in our legal system. Judges have no immunity and can be tried and should be tried but the use of DSS is absolutely wrong. Continue... “The DSS operatives, even when they overstretched themselves and conducted investigations on the Judges, ought to hand over their findings to the appropriate institutions of government: the Police or National Judicial Council for prosecution and punishment. “The rule of law is a core value of governance and therefore must be guided jealousy. Prosecution of civil and corruption cases is not the responsibility of DSS. Internal security is the main duty of the DSS and they should stick to that. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
